What makes it different

  1. One puzzle. Every reader.

The same daily grid for everyone in the world, with the difficulty following the week: a gentle Monday, a fiendish Friday, the diabolical Sunday Special.

  2. A proper solving kit.

Pencil marks written in the margins, cell-first or digit-first entry, and wrong entries circled in red ink as they happen. The editor will help if asked, and it goes on the record.

  3. File your times, or don't.

Take a byline and the league tables rank your clean solves, fastest first. Filing costs nothing and reading the tables is free for everyone. Ignore them entirely and the paper never mentions it.

  4. Ink on paper, not plastic.

A serif masthead, four paper stocks, and a rubber SOLVED stamp when the page falls. No ads between puzzles, no third-party trackers, and the daily edition needs no account at all.

Questions

What is sDoku?

A sudoku app printed like an old newspaper puzzle page. There is one daily puzzle for everyone, an archive of fresh puzzles in four difficulties, pencil marks for your notes, and a rubber SOLVED stamp when you finish.

Is sDoku free?

Yes. The daily puzzle is always free, and there are no ads. Free readers also get 3 archive puzzles and 3 corrections from the editor each day. A press pass is optional and lifts both limits.

How does the daily puzzle work?

Everyone gets the same grid on the same date. The difficulty follows the week: Gentle on Monday and Tuesday, Tricky on Wednesday and Thursday, Fiendish on Friday and Saturday, and the Diabolical Sunday Special.

Can I get a hint?

Yes. Ask the editor and the right digit goes into the cell you picked. Free readers get 3 corrections a day. A corrected solve leaves today's league table and earns no points.

What are the league tables, and do I need a byline?

They are public rankings of solve times. Today's table ranks clean solves of the daily puzzle, made without the editor's help, fastest first. The weekly and monthly tables count points by difficulty. Anyone can read them. To file your own times, sign in with a free sapplify account. Your byline is the name the tables print you under. Leave it blank and you appear as an anonymous reader.

Do I need an account?

No. The daily puzzle, the archive, your statistics and your press cuttings all work without one. Signing in is free, and it is how your times get onto the league tables.

Is my data private?

Your puzzles, times and statistics stay on your phone. There are no ads and no third-party trackers. The app sends anonymous usage and crash data to our own servers, never your grids or your statistics. If you file to the league tables, other readers see your byline and your times, nothing else.

Does sDoku work offline?

Yes. Puzzles are made on your phone, so the daily puzzle and the archive need no connection. Only the league tables, signing in and buying a press pass need the internet. Solves you finish offline are filed once you are back online and signed in.

What does a press pass add?

Unlimited archive puzzles, unlimited corrections from the editor, the last seven days of back issues, and two more paper stocks, Sepia and Archival. It comes as a monthly or yearly subscription, or as a one-time Patron edition. The daily puzzle and the league tables stay free without it.
